Background of the Study
Evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing involves integrating the best available research findings into clinical decision-making to improve patient care outcomes (Graham et al., 2023). However, in many regions, including Taraba State, nurses’ involvement in research and EBP is often limited by factors such as inadequate training, lack of research resources, and insufficient support from healthcare institutions. The importance of EBP cannot be overstated, as it helps nurses provide care that is not only effective but also efficient and aligned with current scientific understanding.
In Taraba State, where healthcare resources are limited, it is essential for nurses to embrace research and EBP to overcome challenges in patient care delivery. However, there is limited research on the extent of nurses’ participation in EBP, as well as the barriers they face in adopting these practices. This study seeks to assess the level of nurse participation in research and EBP in Taraba State, identify the barriers to involvement, and propose strategies for promoting research engagement among nurses.
Statement of the Problem
Nurses in Taraba State may not be fully engaged in research and evidence-based practice, which could lead to the use of outdated or less effective clinical practices. Barriers such as lack of time, limited access to research resources, and insufficient training may prevent nurses from adopting EBP fully. Understanding the current level of nurse participation in research and EBP, as well as the challenges they encounter, is essential for developing strategies to promote the integration of research into nursing practice.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of nurses' participation in research and evidence-based practice in Taraba State.
2. To identify the barriers to nurses’ involvement in research and EBP in the state.
3. To recommend strategies to enhance nurses' engagement in research and evidence-based practice in Taraba State.
Research Questions
1. To what extent do nurses in Taraba State participate in research and evidence-based practice?
2. What are the barriers to nurses' participation in research and evidence-based practice in Taraba State?
3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance nurses’ participation in research and evidence-based practice in Taraba State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses in Taraba State who receive training in evidence-based practice are more likely to engage in research activities than those without training.
2. Barriers such as lack of time, resources, and institutional support significantly hinder nurses' participation in research and evidence-based practice in Taraba State.
3. Providing nurses with research skills training and institutional support will significantly increase their involvement in evidence-based practice.
Definitions of Terms
• Evidence-Based Practice (EBP): The conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about patient care.
• Nursing Research: Systematic inquiry that aims to generate new knowledge or validate existing knowledge to inform clinical nursing practice.
• Barriers to Research Participation: Factors that impede nurses from engaging in research activities, such as time constraints, lack of resources, and limited access to research mentorship.
